Weekend Madness

I am a firefighter with a volunteer company in PA. We don't get money from the state or the federal government (usually) and so are primarily funded by donations. This weekend is one of our biggest money making events. We are having our annual fire auction. We'd make more money if we auctioned off the guys and girls but instead we are auctioning off other people's junk. The sale usually lasts all day Saturday - we have a lot of junk!

So, wish us well, and don't forget to donate to your local volunteer fire department.

Fire auction? You're auctioning fire? I'll take 2, please. Do they come in different sizes?

Our little town has a big volunteer emergency workers fundraising thing every year too. They sell beer, and have a band in the street with dancing and drinking beer on the courthouse lawn. Oh, yeah, raffles too. Raises tons of money!

I remember when I was a little kid and my dad was a volunteer fireman. This was in a small town in Nebraska. One day, a grain elevator on the outskirts of town caught on fire. Everyone was terrified because those things can go off like a mini H-bomb. A sizable chunk of the town could have disappeared in the blink of an eye.

I'll never forget seeing my dad and those other (seemingly) fearless men heading out to fight that inferno--grim faced, but determined. Those guys were insurance salesmen, bartenders and grocery clerks--just the regular guys around town. They got the job done. That day, they were heroes of the highest order.

Support your local volunteer fire department? Damn straight!
